BOSS BOOT MODULES, TRAYS, CABLES & FANS
Dell Server Accessories — BOSS Boot, Trays, Cables, Risers & Fans
The components that complete a PowerEdge build or repair: BOSS-N1 M.2 NVMe boot modules with hardware RAID1, drive trays and carriers, DAC/AOC/SAS and 400G cable kits, risers, CPU heatsinks, iDRAC licenses, system fans, ReadyRails rail kits, cable-management arms and bezels — genuine Dell parts matched to your model.
Separating the operating system onto a redundant BOSS module frees data bays, while correct trays, cables, risers and fans keep a server supported and quiet. We supply the genuine Dell accessory for your chassis rather than a lookalike that can trigger fan or backplane errors.
Accessories we supply
BOSS-N1 module
Holds one or two 80mm enterprise M.2 NVMe SSDs (480/960GB, 1DWPD) in fixed hardware RAID1 or single RAID0, hot-pluggable on rack servers.
M.2 SSDs for BOSS
Qualified read-intensive M.2 NVMe drives with surprise-removal rebuild so a failed boot drive is replaced without downtime.
Drive trays/carriers
Genuine Dell 2.5in and 3.5in hot-plug carriers, including hybrid trays, so added drives seat and report correctly.
Cable kits
DAC and AOC network cables plus internal SAS/PCIe cable kits matched to the chassis and controller.
Riser cards
PCIe riser configurations for adding adapters or GPUs, selected by the chassis riser layout your model supports.
Rail kits & bezels
Genuine ReadyRails sliding/static rails, optional cable-management arms and standard/security front bezels matched to your chassis height.
Optics & security modules
Genuine Dell SFP+/SFP28/QSFP28 transceivers and DAC twinax cables, plus TPM 2.0 modules and filler blanks, so fibre links and measured boot are fully supported.
CPU heatsinks
Standard and high-performance processor heatsinks matched to the CPU TDP band and chassis (1U/2U, with or without GPUs), including customer-install kits for CPU upgrades.
iDRAC & remote management
Genuine iDRAC9 Enterprise and iDRAC Datacenter perpetual digital licenses that unlock dedicated remote KVM, virtual media and out-of-band management on PowerEdge.
System fans
Hot-plug, high-performance or standard fans matched to the CPU/GPU thermal profile to prevent airflow and noise faults.
Typical applications
- Separating OS boot from data drives on new servers
- Adding trays/cables/heatsinks for a CPU upgrade
- Restoring redundancy after an M.2 boot failure
- Enabling iDRAC remote management on a new fleet

Frequently asked questions
What is Dell BOSS-N1 and why use it?
BOSS-N1 is a boot-optimized module holding one or two M.2 NVMe SSDs in hardware RAID1, isolating the operating system from data drives so a boot failure does not affect data and data bays stay free.
What drives does BOSS-N1 use?
It uses enterprise 80mm M.2 NVMe read-intensive (1DWPD) SSDs in 480GB or 960GB; we supply the Dell-qualified modules rather than consumer M.2 drives that may not be supported.
Can I replace a BOSS M.2 drive without downtime?
On supported rack servers BOSS-N1 is hot-pluggable; with RAID1, removing and inserting a new M.2 drive automatically starts a rebuild, so the server keeps running.
Do I need genuine Dell drive trays?
For a supported PowerEdge, genuine carriers seat correctly and report to the backplane, avoiding the recognition, LED or warranty issues that aftermarket trays can introduce.
What cables do I need for new NICs or controllers?
That depends on the connection: DAC/AOC for Ethernet between server and switch, and internal SAS/PCIe cable kits for controllers/backplanes. We match cables to your exact chassis and parts.
How do I know which riser my server supports?
Riser configurations are chassis and slot specific. Send your service tag and the card you want to add; we identify the supported riser and slot rather than a generic bracket.
Are high-performance fans necessary?
High-performance fans are typically required for certain CPUs, multi-drive or GPU configurations; using the wrong profile can cause thermal faults or excessive noise. We match the fan to the build.
Can system fans be replaced while running?
Hot-plug fan modules are designed for replacement without powering down on supported chassis, provided the replacement is the matching Dell fan and airflow is managed promptly.
Does BOSS-N1 use a battery-backed cache?
No. BOSS-N1 is a fixed-function boot controller with no non-volatile cache or battery, using write-through and a single RAID1 mirror tailored to OS boot rather than general storage.
Can the OS be pre-installed on BOSS before shipping?
Yes. With a server order we configure BOSS RAID1, install your OS or hypervisor on the mirrored module and verify boot before the complete system ships.
What is the difference between BOSS and booting from a regular SSD?
BOSS dedicates redundant M.2 drives and a controller to the OS, freeing front data bays and providing automatic RAID1 rebuild; booting from a data SSD consumes a bay and shares the data backplane.
Are rails, bezels and cable arms available?
Yes. Rail kits, security bezels and cable-management arms for rack deployment are available on request matched to your chassis.
What warranty covers these accessories?
New genuine Dell accessories carry the manufacturer warranty. We confirm the term for each part and coordinate support if a defect occurs.
How are small accessories shipped?
Small parts are anti-static packed and can be consolidated with a server/storage order in one shipment, or shipped individually with tracking for standalone repairs.
Do I need a different heatsink when upgrading the CPU?
Often, yes. Heatsinks are matched to a CPU TDP band and to whether the chassis has GPUs; a faster CPU may require a high-performance heatsink to avoid throttling. Send your service tag and target CPU and we supply the correct Dell heatsink kit.
What does an iDRAC Enterprise or Datacenter license add?
The free iDRAC offers basic management; an Enterprise or Datacenter perpetual license unlocks dedicated-NIC remote KVM, virtual media, video replay and advanced telemetry so a server can be managed even when the OS is down. We supply genuine Dell digital licenses.
Do you supply 200G/400G cables and NVLink bridges?
Yes. We supply genuine QSFP56-DD passive DAC and active optical cables at 200G/400G, breakout assemblies and NVIDIA NVLink bridges for paired H100/A100 GPUs, matched to the switch and server platform.
