Dell PowerEdge R7725 vs R7625: 17G Turin vs 16G Genoa for New Dual-Socket EPYC Servers
Buying guide · Updated 2026-09-18 · 10 min read
Short answer: which should you buy?
Buy the R7725 when you want the newest platform, the highest core and memory-bandwidth ceiling, the densest E3.S front-end (up to 40 drives), and a 3200 W power envelope for the biggest accelerators. Buy the R7625 when a proven 16G platform at a more accessible project price meets your core count, and you want the widest field of quoted configurations. Both are supplied new and sealed with a manufacturer-backed warranty; the R7625 is simply one generation behind.

Where the two servers sit
Both are 2U, dual-socket general-purpose rack servers aimed at virtualization, databases, private cloud, HPC and AI-adjacent workloads. They share Dell’s PowerEdge systems-management philosophy and direct-warm-air data-center design, but they belong to different generations:
- R7625 — 16th generation (16G). Launched around AMD’s EPYC 9004 “Genoa” family. Dell’s spec sheet lists 4th-Gen EPYC 9004; the platform documentation also references 9005-compatible thermal-design entries, but the shipped ceiling Dell publishes is 128 cores per socket on 9004 parts such as the EPYC 9754.
- R7725 — 17th generation (17G). Built for 5th-Gen EPYC 9005 “Turin,” with a published ceiling of 192 cores per socket — 384 cores across two CPUs in a single 2U chassis. It moves to faster memory, a denser E3.S front plane, newer PERC 13 RAID and iDRAC10.
Naming reminder: in Dell’s AMD range the model ends in “15” (R7625, R7725); the Intel equivalents end in “0” (R760, R770). The third digit is the generation: R76xx = 16G, R77xx = 17G.

All values above are taken from Dell’s published PowerEdge R7625 and R7725 specification sheets. Exact bay and riser availability depends on the chassis configuration selected at order time.
1. CPU and core density: Turin pulls ahead
The biggest single difference is the core ceiling. The R7625 tops out at 128 cores per socket with EPYC 9004 (256 cores in a dual-CPU build). The R7725, on EPYC 9005 Turin, is rated by Dell for up to 192 cores per socket — 384 cores in the same 2U footprint. For CPU-licensed, per-core-priced software that extra density can cut the number of sockets or servers you need; for dense VM consolidation and multi-tenant cloud it is the clearest reason to choose 17G.
If your workload tops out well below 256 total cores, the R7625’s Genoa parts deliver the same Zen-class x86 behavior and will rarely leave you short. The extra Turin headroom matters most when you are sizing for peak consolidation or a 4-5 year platform life.
2. Memory: same 6 TB ceiling, one-third more bandwidth
Both servers provide 24 DDR5 RDIMM slots across two CPUs and a 6 TB maximum. The difference is speed: the R7625 runs DDR5 at 4800 MT/s, while the R7725 moves to DDR5-6400 MT/s across 24 channels. That is a meaningful gain for memory-bandwidth-bound work — in-memory databases, large VMware/Hyper-V hosts, analytics and HPC — but it changes nothing for capacity-bound builds that simply need many terabytes at the lowest cost, where either platform reaches 6 TB.
3. Storage: R7725 goes to 40 E3.S, R7625 keeps rear bays
Both support conventional 3.5" and 2.5" SAS/SATA/NVMe layouts plus the newer EDSFF E3.S form factor over PCIe Gen5. The R7725 pushes the front plane to up to 40 E3.S drives (versus 32 on the R7625) and adds an 8 × U.2 mixed configuration, which suits all-flash NVMe and high-density software-defined storage.
The trade-off is at the back: the R7625 offers rear hot-swap bays (2/4 × 2.5" or 4 × E3.S), while the R7725 has no rear drive bays. If your standard build relies on rear-boot or rear-storage drives, factor that in. Both support dedicated M.2/EDSFF boot via BOSS so operating-system disks do not have to consume a front bay either way.
4. GPUs, PCIe and power
Neither chassis is a dedicated 4U GPU server, but both take accelerators. The R7625 supports up to two 300 W double-width GPUs (or six 75 W single-width cards). The R7725 raises that to two 450 W double-width GPUs and adds a second OCP 3.0 networking option, with PCIe Gen5 across the risers rather than the R7625’s mixed Gen5/Gen4 set.
Power scales to match: the R7625 tops out at 2800 W PSUs, while the R7725 reaches 3200 W and offers 1500/3200 W supplies at 277 V AC and HVDC plus a 1400 W -48 V DC option for telecom and central-office racks. If you plan to fill the box with high-power accelerators, NICs and NVMe, the R7725’s thermal and power headroom is the safer long-life choice — aided by Dell’s newer multi-vector cooling and iDRAC10 management.
5. Platform life, RAID and management
The R7725 introduces Dell’s PERC 13 family (H365i / H965i / H975i), the external HBA465e, BOSS-N1 boot and iDRAC10. The R7625 uses the PERC 12-era H965i/H755 line, HBA355 and iDRAC9. In day-to-day administration both are familiar PowerEdge environments; 17G simply gives you the newest controller generation, longer remaining support runway and later feature updates — worth weighting for infrastructure you expect to run to the end of the decade.
