What Is the Dell PowerEdge R7625?

The R7625 is the mainstream dual-socket 2U model in Dell’s current 16th PowerEdge generation. Two 4th Gen AMD EPYC 9004 (Genoa and Genoa-X) processors provide up to 128 Zen 4 cores per socket — up to 256 per chassis — with up to 6 TB of DDR5-4800.

We propose it most often for dense vSphere, Hyper-V and KVM consolidation; all-flash vSAN, Ceph and Proxmox clusters; large SQL, Oracle and in-memory analytics databases; and inference or VDI hosts pairing high thread counts with up to two double-width accelerators.

As an active-production platform it carries current firmware and spare parts with a full support runway — a fleet standard, not a clearance purchase.

Why the 16G Jump Matters: DDR5-4800, PCIe Gen5 and E3.S

The 15G-to-16G step changed, at once, every subsystem that bottlenecks modern workloads.

DDR5-4800 across 24 channels. Each socket exposes 12 channels at 4800 MT/s — 24 in parallel. With up to 128 cores per socket, that bandwidth keeps cores fed; the gain over the 15G DDR4-3200 baseline is largest for in-memory databases, caching tiers and oversubscribed virtualization hosts.

PCIe Gen5 doubles lane throughput. A Gen5 x16 link carries roughly twice Gen4 bandwidth, letting Gen5 NVMe and 100–400 GbE adapters run at rated speed. Gen5 and Gen4 slots are mixed, so existing Gen4 cards carry over without a full peripheral refresh.

E3.S is the new density target. Shorter than a 2.5″ U.2 device, E3.S draws cleaner airflow and tolerates a higher per-drive power budget, so 32 flash devices fit behind a 2U bezel instead of 24, each on direct Gen5 signaling.

OCP 3.0 frees riser slots. A snap-in OCP 3.0 card handles 100/400 GbE without consuming a PCIe slot, leaving risers for GPUs or HBAs.

24 DDR5 Channels, 32 E3.S Bays and the 400W Cooling Reality

Who fills 24 DIMMs and 6 TB. All 24 slots take DDR5-4800 RDIMMs, reaching 6 TB with 256 GB modules — for in-memory and column-store databases, caching tiers, dense VDI and per-socket licensing. Cluster orders ship with mirrored DIMM layouts.

The 32-drive all-flash build. The maximum front cage is 32 × E3.S (or 24 × 2.5″ NVMe), plus up to four rear bays. Pair Gen5 flash with the H965i/H755N or HBA355i/HBA355e passthrough; a BOSS card gives redundant hypervisor boot.

The 400 W ceiling and direct liquid cooling. The fastest 9004 SKUs carry a 400 W configurable TDP — two approach 800 W of CPU heat. Mid-range SKUs air-cool comfortably; combining 400 W CPUs with a full E3.S cage or double-width GPUs requires Dell direct liquid cooling (DLC) with cold plates and manifold distribution, which we specify at quotation.

Why two double-width GPUs, not three. The 15G R7525 accepted three double-width accelerators; the R7625 is rated for 2 × 300 W double-width or 6 × 75 W single-width. Gen5 risers, the deep E3.S backplane and the 400 W envelope take the volume the third cage once occupied.

Power sizing and LVDC. Redundant PSUs span 800–2800 W; the 1100 W option adds an LVDC (-48 V DC) feed for telecom and central-office sites.

R7625 vs R7525 (15G), R6625 (1U) and the 17G R7725

Against the R7525 (15G). The R7525 is the prior-generation value platform on EPYC 7002/7003, DDR4 and Gen4. Its acquisition cost is lower when software never saturates Gen4; you give up DDR5 bandwidth, E3.S density and a current platform’s support runway.

Against the R6625 (1U). The R6625 is the same 16G silicon in half the rack height, with fewer bays, a tighter GPU envelope and less room for top-TDP SKUs. Choose it for pure compute density; choose the 2U R7625 when storage, accelerators or 400 W parts are on the bill of materials.

Against the R7725 (17G). The newer R7725 is Dell’s 17G successor on AMD EPYC 9005 (Turin); the R7625 is the 16G platform on EPYC 9004 (Genoa). Choose the R7725 only when Turin’s gains are required — see the full R7725 vs R7625 comparison; its 1U sibling is the R6725.

Single-socket options. For per-socket licensing, the same-generation R7615 covers 2U one-CPU builds and the R6515 smaller footprints. See our single-socket EPYC page and the full AMD EPYC model list.

Condition, Testing and Warranty

Every R7625 we supply is brand-new, factory-sealed current production, backed by a 3-year warranty provided by Beijing Xinchuan Technology Co., Ltd. We configure sealed chassis with the ordered processors, memory, drives and controllers, baseline BIOS and iDRAC, and run CPU, memory and storage stress cycles. Revision, controller and PSU rating are checked against the order, and each server ships with a written inspection report — not an anonymous marketplace listing. Full terms are on our warranty page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Dell PowerEdge R7625?

Dell’s current 16th-generation 2U rack server: two AMD EPYC 9004 (Genoa / Genoa-X) sockets, up to 128 cores per socket, 24 DDR5-4800 DIMMs to 6 TB, PCIe Gen5 plus OCP 3.0 and up to 32 E3.S bays. Supplied brand-new and sealed.

Is the R7625 brand-new or New Old Stock?

Brand-new, factory-sealed hardware from the active production line — not New Old Stock or shelf-cleared inventory. Every unit ships with a 3-year warranty and an inspection report.

What do DDR5, PCIe Gen5 and E3.S actually gain over a 15G server?

24 DDR5-4800 channels raise bandwidth per core; Gen5 doubles throughput for flash and 100–400 GbE; E3.S fits 32 front bays instead of 24. The gains show in dense virtualization, all-flash storage and in-memory databases.

Can the R7625 run 400 W EPYC CPUs and double-width GPUs?

Yes, but not every combination air-cools: 400 W cTDP CPUs with a full flash cage or double-width accelerators require Dell direct liquid cooling, specified at quotation. GPUs are capped at two × 300 W double-width or six × 75 W single-width cards.

How do I choose between the R7625, R7525, R6625 and R7725?

The R7525 is the lower-cost DDR4/Gen4 15G platform; the R6625 is the same 16G generation in 1U; the R7725 is the newer 17G successor on EPYC 9005 (Turin), a separate line from this 9004-based R7625, which holds the middle ground.

What warranty and testing are included?

A 3-year warranty on every unit. Before dispatch, builds receive firmware baselining and CPU, memory and storage stress testing, plus an inspection report. See the warranty page.

What is the lead time and how do I order?

It depends on CPU SKU, memory, drives, DLC and quantity. Send your target build, quantity, destination and incoterm via the contact form, WhatsApp or email; we reply within one business day with a build sheet and firm pricing.
