LSI MegaRAID 9500-8i

LSI MegaRAID 9500-8i

The Broadcom/LSI MegaRAID 9500-8i is an 8-internal-port, 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA tri-mode RAID controller for xFusion FusionServer systems. It runs on a PCIe 4.0 x8 host link and offers no onboard write cache (a cacheless entry-level design). It is used to turn the server's internal drive bays into hardware RAID volumes.

Overview

The MegaRAID 9500-8i, built around the Broadcom SAS3808 tri-mode I/O processor, exposes up to 8 SAS/SATA lanes (12 Gb/s SAS, 6 Gb/s SATA) through 2×/4× SFF-8654 SlimSAS internal. It is tri-mode, so the same ports can also be set to PCIe/NVMe drive mode.

Supported RAID levels include 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60. Non-RAID (JBOD/passthrough) mode is available for software-defined storage and HBA-style deployments.

How to choose

Because this card has no onboard cache, it targets boot arrays, entry-level virtualization and passthrough setups rather than heavy write caching. If you need write acceleration, choose a cached MegaRAID model.

Frequently asked questions

Which RAID levels are supported?

Hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60, plus JBOD/passthrough mode.

Does it support NVMe drives?

Yes, it is a tri-mode controller (SAS, SATA and direct PCIe/NVMe).

How much cache does it have?

It has no onboard cache and no CacheVault module.

What happens to writes during a power cut?

There is no write cache, so there is no cached data to lose.

What is the host interface?

PCIe 4.0 x8.

How are the drives cabled?

2×/4× SFF-8654 SlimSAS internal; match these to the server backplane or use the included cables.

Which FusionServer models is it compatible with?

6 models across the current range, including 2258 V7, 2288H V5, 2288H V6-16DIMM, 2288H V6-32DIMM, 5288 V6, 5298 V7. See the compatibility list below.

Is it a new part and what warranty applies?

Genuine xFusion RAID controller (P/N 0231Y651), supplied new/tested with a 1-year warranty.

Can it replace an older 93xx/94xx card?

It is a newer tri-mode generation; drives and RAID configs can usually be imported, but confirm firmware and re-verify the array before production.

8i or 16i – how do I choose?

The number is internal drive lanes. Pick the 8i for smaller backplanes and the 16i when you need up to 16 drives.

Do you quote for the card and for projects?

Yes – send the part number or your server model; we reply with pricing and lead time (no public list price).
