Dell PowerVault MD2460
4U SAS-4 dense JBOD with 60 x 3.5″ drive bays for PowerEdge DAS
The PowerVault MD2460 is the densest direct-attached shelf in the MD24 family: sixty large-form-factor drives in a 4U chassis, linked to PowerEdge hosts over redundant 24Gb SAS-4 connections. Like the other MD24 models it is controllerless, with RAID provided by the server’s HBA or PERC. Connect up to two enclosures (120 drives) for as much as 2.40PB of dense, direct-attached capacity.
Why the MD2460 is the densest DAS shelf
When a direct-attached server needs the maximum number of mechanical drives in the least space, the MD2460 is the answer: sixty 3.5-inch bays in a 4U chassis with four SAS connections per EMM to feed all those drives. As a controllerless shelf it still leaves RAID and provisioning to the host, but it concentrates capacity far more densely than the 2U models, making it well suited to backup servers and large local archives.
Dense capacity means dense infrastructure requirements. Each loaded MD2460 approaches 91 kilograms and uses 1500-watt power supplies, so the rack, rails and circuits should be validated before rollout. With two shelves attached to a supported host, however, the platform delivers roughly 2.4 petabytes of direct-attached storage – an unusually large footprint for storage that remains server-local.
Platform architecture
Controllerless JBOD
The shelf exposes drives straight to the host; there is no storage OS to patch and no controller cache. All RAID decisions stay on the PowerEdge server.
Redundant EMMs
Two Enclosure Management Modules each carry independent SAS paths so a single cable or module failure does not isolate the shelf from the host.
Server-native management
Enclosure status surfaces inside iDRAC and OpenManage alongside the server, or through SHMCLI, so there is no separate console to monitor.
SAS-4 bandwidth
24Gbps SAS-4 links feed the denser shelves, autosensing down to 12Gb for compatibility with earlier adapters and server generations.
- No RAID controller – the host PowerEdge HBA or PERC owns data protection
- 12Gb / 24Gb SAS-4 autosensing host links on redundant EMMs
- Managed natively through the server’s iDRAC or via SHMCLI
- Hot-pluggable drives and redundant, hot-swap power and cooling
- Works with current and previous generations of PowerEdge servers
- SED / FIPS self-encrypting drive options for data-at-rest security
- Dense mechanical capacity at a low cost per terabyte
Where this model fits
Dense local backup target
Attach 60-disk capacity directly to a backup server for high-density, high-throughput disk backup.
High-capacity archive shelf
Retain large media, surveillance and compliance datasets on dense spinning storage close to the host.
Maximum DAS density
Deliver more raw terabytes per rack unit than the 2U shelves for capacity-first PowerEdge deployments.

Typical configurations
How this unit is supplied
Configured to your host
We match the shelf or array to your server model, host bus adapter and cabling so the unit arrives ready to rack and connect, not as a pile of separate parts.
Tested before shipment
Drives, controllers or EMMs, power supplies and firmware revisions are checked so the configuration powers up and presents storage on first install.
Service and warranty
New systems are supplied with the appropriate Dell ProSupport and ProDeploy coverage, with options for proactive and multi-year support.
Frequently asked questions
How many drives fit in the MD2460?
Sixty 3.5-inch drives in a 4U chassis – the highest mechanical density in the MD24 JBOD family.
Does the MD2460 include RAID?
No. It is a controllerless JBOD; the attached PowerEdge server provides RAID through an HBA355e or PERC H840.
How many enclosures and drives can one host support?
Up to two MD2460 shelves, for a total of 120 drives, behind a supported HBA355e adapter.
What is the maximum capacity?
Roughly 2.40PB using 20TB HDDs across two enclosures – among the largest direct-attached configurations Dell offers.
Why does the MD2460 have four host connectors per EMM?
The denser shelf uses four 4-lane 24Gbps SAS connections per EMM to provide enough bandwidth for its 60 drives; the 2U shelves use two.
What are the power and weight requirements?
Dual 1500W power supplies on 200-240 VAC, and up to 90.7 kg (200 lb) per loaded shelf. Rack loading should be planned accordingly.
Which PowerEdge servers work with it?
14G, 15G and 16G PowerEdge systems such as the R760, R660, R7625 and R6625 using a qualified 12Gb or 24Gb SAS adapter.
How is a dense JBOD managed?
Through the host server’s iDRAC or the SHMCLI utility, so the shelf is monitored as part of the server rather than a separate storage system.
How do I order the full dense DAS solution?
Share your server model and capacity target; we configure the MD2460 with the correct SAS adapter, cables and Dell service, then quote the complete kit.
Why does the MD2460 need four SAS connectors per EMM?
Sixty mechanical drives generate more aggregate traffic than the 2U shelves, so four 4-lane 24Gbps links per EMM supply the bandwidth needed to keep the dense chassis fed.
What are the rack and power requirements for two shelves?
Two loaded shelves total around 181 kg and use 1500W supplies on 200-240 VAC, so rack load rating, rail depth and circuit capacity should be confirmed together.
Can the MD2460 be attached to older PowerEdge generations?
Yes. The interface autosenses between 24Gb and 12Gb SAS, and the shelf is supported with current and previous PowerEdge generations using a qualified adapter.
