2U dual-controller SAN/DAS array with 24 x 2.5″ drive bays

The PowerVault ME5224 puts twenty-four small-form-factor (SFF) bays in a dense 2U chassis. With more spindles – or all-flash SSDs – in the same rack space as the ME5212, it is the performance-oriented member of the family for latency-sensitive block storage. Scale online with ME524 and ME584 expansion enclosures to as many as 276 drives.

Why the ME5224 is the performance 2U model

The difference between twelve large bays and twenty-four small bays is not just a naming detail: in the same 2U space, the ME5224 doubles the number of devices that can serve IO. That matters twice – when every bay is populated with SSDs for an entry all-flash array, and when fast 10K SAS drives are used for database workloads that benefit from mechanical parallelism. The controllers, cache and host options are shared with the rest of the family, so choosing the ME5224 does not narrow your expansion path.

The trade-off is straightforward. Large-form-factor bulk capacity at the lowest cost per terabyte belongs on the ME5212 or ME5284; latency-sensitive and transaction-oriented storage belongs here. The ME5224 is also the shallowest of the controller enclosures, which can simplify installation in racks where dense cable management leaves limited room at the rear.
