Dense, cost-effective storage on a proven DDR5 platform

The FusionServer 5288 V7 packs up to 44 hot-swappable 3.5-inch drives into a single 4U chassis, making it a workhorse for bulk storage where cost per terabyte matters. Four rear U.2 NVMe bays add a fast tier for metadata, caching and active data.

Two 4th-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and 32 DDR5 DIMMs give it enough compute to run storage software, compression, erasure coding and analytics directly on the node — not just attach disks.

  • 44 × 3.5" SAS/SATA + up to 8 NVMe drives
  • 2 × 4th-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable, up to 350W
  • 32 × DDR5 DIMMs at 4800 MT/s
  • PCIe 5.0 expansion with dual OCP 3.0 networking

Built for warm and bulk storage workloads

The 5288 V7 fits the middle and bottom of the storage hierarchy — large pools that demand capacity density rather than the absolute latest silicon.

01

Backup & archive target

High-capacity landing zone for backups, snapshots and long-term retention at low $/TB. Consolidate what used to be several smaller backup shelves into one 4U node — with 44 bays you can keep many restore points on spinning disk instead of tape, so last-week and last-month data is back online in minutes rather than hours.

02

Software-defined storage

Dense node for Ceph, MinIO, vSAN capacity tiers and distributed object storage clusters. Use the 5288 V7 as a capacity node alongside smaller all-flash nodes: front the cluster with NVMe for hot objects, then place bulk replicas and erasure-coded pools here to cut the $/TB of your storage pool without changing the software layer.

03

Video & surveillance

Local bulk storage for video management, media archives and surveillance recording. Surveillance retention is capacity-bound rather than CPU-bound; a single 4U node can absorb dozens of camera streams writing simultaneously, with compute headroom for indexing, transcoding or clip export when an incident has to be reviewed.

04

Big data / data lake

Capacity-dense Hadoop and data-lake nodes with local NVMe for hot blocks. Keep the data your jobs scan periodically — raw logs, historical partitions, training corpora — on dense disk instead of expensive flash. Two Xeon Scalable CPUs still have the cores to run local compute when the data is queried.

05

Content repositories

Document, imaging and media repositories in healthcare, government and education. Any workload dominated by “write once, read sometimes” data fits naturally. Add the four front NVMe bays for a metadata or journal tier and the same server presents both the high-capacity pool and a fast front end to clients.

06

Private / hybrid cloud

Storage-heavy cloud nodes that pair with compute servers in a converged rack. Build a storage node that behaves like a much more expensive appliance: hot instances and cache on the four U.2 NVMe drives, templates, ISO libraries, snapshots and idle volumes on the 44-bay array behind them.

Storage architecture

Where the 5288 V7 sits in a tiered storage design

Most storage environments do not have one single media type — they separate data by how often it is touched. A well-designed platform keeps hot data on flash, moves warm data to high-density disk, and reserves the cheapest tier for cold retention. The 5288 V7 is purpose-built for the two capacity-heavy layers.

HOT TIER

NVMe / all-flash

Active databases, virtual machines and data being read constantly. Use the 5288 V7’s four front U.2 NVMe bays for metadata, journals and a small hot set, or pair the node with an all-flash server for the latency-critical front end.

WARM TIER

High-density disk

Backups from the last few weeks, SDS capacity pools, surveillance footage and data-lake partitions that are scanned periodically. This is the 5288 V7’s primary role — up to 44 drives in 4U at low $/TB.

COLD TIER

Archive / retention

Long-term compliance and reference data that is rarely read. The same chassis filled with large-capacity drives serves as an on-disk archive that is far faster to restore from than tape, at a fraction of flash cost.

Practical design tip: start with the four NVMe bays as a fast front end and fill the 44-bay backplane in phases as retention grows. Because the node is software-agnostic, this tiering can be handled by your storage software (Ceph, MinIO, vSAN, backup software) rather than by proprietary hardware.

Which generation

5288 V8, V7 or V6 — choosing the right generation

The same 4U, 44-bay chassis spans three CPU generations. All three are shipped factory-sealed with a 3-year warranty; the difference is the platform age and the use case it best matches.

Best fitNew deployments, longest platform lifecycleBest balance of price and current-gen featuresBudget capacity nodes, matching existing DDR4 estates
Typical buyerBuilding a fresh cluster to run for 5+ yearsWant DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 without the newest-CPU premiumExtending an Ice Lake fleet at the lowest $/TB

As a rule of thumb: choose the V8 for brand-new projects, the V7 when you want a modern DDR5/PCIe 5.0 platform at a keener price, and the V6 when pure capacity cost matters most or the node must match an existing 3rd-Gen Xeon environment. Frequently asked questions

Is the 5288 V7 a new server or refurbished?
It is factory-sealed new old stock (NOS) — never used, in the original factory packaging. It is not refurbished or pulled from a data center, and carries a 3-year warranty backed by Beijing Xinchuan Technology.
How many drives can the 5288 V7 hold?
Up to 44 hot-swappable 3.5-inch SAS/SATA drives, plus up to 8 NVMe SSDs depending on the backplane (a 44 large-drive plus 4 NVMe layout is typical). Two M.2 SSDs can be used for the operating system.
What processors does it support?
One or two 4th-Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors (Sapphire Rapids), with a TDP up to 350W per socket, across the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum ranges.
What is the maximum memory?
The chassis has 32 DDR5 DIMM slots running at up to 4800 MT/s. Total capacity depends on the size of the modules selected; we configure to your requirement.
Which storage and workloads is it best for?
It is ideal for backup and archive, software-defined and object storage, video and surveillance storage, big-data/data-lake nodes and content repositories — anywhere capacity density and low cost per terabyte are the priority.
How do I get a price and lead time?
These servers are configured to order and sold by quotation rather than a fixed list price. Send us your CPU, memory, drive and NIC requirements through the contact page and we will reply with pricing, availability and delivery time.
