ME5200 SERIES

Dell PowerVault ME5212

2U dual-controller SAN/DAS array with 12 x 3.5″ drive bays

The PowerVault ME5212 is the 2U, twelve-bay entry point to the ME5200 family. It pairs dual-active Intel Xeon controllers with large-form-factor (LFF) drives to deliver dependable shared block storage for small and mid-sized environments. Start with a handful of disks and add capacity online with ME512, ME524 or ME584 expansion enclosures – up to 264 drives behind a single base array.

Why organizations start with the ME5212

Most storage refreshes do not begin at the full capacity target – they begin with the data that exists today and a requirement to grow without a forklift upgrade. The ME5212 fits that pattern: a compact 2U controller enclosure that accepts large, economical disks, runs the complete ME5 firmware feature set, and can be expanded online as retention windows lengthen. There is no architectural penalty for starting small, because the same controllers, host protocols and data services carry through to the largest configuration.

Because its bays are large-form-factor, the ME5212 favors cost per terabyte and sequential throughput over the highest drive count. That makes it a natural fit for shared general-purpose LUNs, virtualized hosts that need steady rather than extreme latency, and disk-based backup or archive data that grows predictably. When flash performance is required, SSDs can still be added to create an auto-tiered pool inside the same array.

Platform architecture

Dual-active controllers

Two Intel Xeon controllers sit active/active and present the same LUNs on both modules. If one module is removed or faults, its partner takes over paths without taking the volume offline.

12Gb SAS backend

Drives and expansion enclosures connect on a 12Gb SAS back end using wide ports, one per controller, keeping the path to added shelves simple and deterministic.

Pooled virtual storage

Capacity is organized into virtual storage pools with pages that can be auto-tiered across SSD, performance and capacity media as access patterns change.

Included data protection

Redirect-on-write snapshots, thin provisioning, volume copy and asynchronous FC/iSCSI replication are built into the firmware rather than bolt-on licenses.

Where this model fits

General SAN consolidation

Centralize block storage for a mix of application and file servers behind 32Gb FC or 25Gb iSCSI without buying separate systems for each tier.

Virtualized hosts

Serve VMware vSphere and Hyper-V clusters with redundant paths, snapshots and SRM-friendly replication for steady, predictable VM storage.

Growing capacity archive

Begin with the drives you need and scale online to hundreds of disks when retention and backup data expand.

How this unit is supplied

Configured to your host

We match the shelf or array to your server model, host bus adapter and cabling so the unit arrives ready to rack and connect, not as a pile of separate parts.

Tested before shipment

Drives, controllers or EMMs, power supplies and firmware revisions are checked so the configuration powers up and presents storage on first install.

Service and warranty

New systems are supplied with the appropriate Dell ProSupport and ProDeploy coverage, with options for proactive and multi-year support.

Frequently asked questions

Can the ME5212 start with one controller and add a second later?

Yes. The 2U ME5212 can be ordered as a single-controller unit and upgraded to dual active controllers in the field; the 5U ME5284 is dual-controller only.

What is the largest configuration behind one ME5212?

Up to 264 drives and roughly 5.80PB of raw capacity when using three ME584 5U expansion enclosures. With nine ME512 shelves the limit is 2.64PB.

Does the ME5212 support NVMe drives?

No. The ME5200 family is a 12Gb SAS block-storage platform with SAS, NLSAS and SSD media. It is designed for affordable, conventional SAN and DAS rather than NVMe flash.

Are data-protection features licensed separately?

No. Thin provisioning, snapshots, auto-tiering, asynchronous replication and volume copy are included rather than sold as per-feature licenses.

Which host operating systems are supported?

Windows Server 2025 and 2022 (including Hyper-V), RHEL 9.5 and 8.10, SLES 15, and VMware vSphere 8.0 U3 and 9.0, with a vCenter plugin.

Can I replicate from an older ME5012 to a new ME5212?

Yes. Asynchronous replication is supported between ME50XX and ME52XX arrays in either direction over FC or iSCSI.

How is the ME5212 managed?

Through the PowerVault Manager HTML5 web interface, the CLI, OpenManage Enterprise, the VMware vCenter plugin, or the Redfish/Swordfish REST API.

What happens if a drive fails in an ADAPT disk group?

ADAPT distributes data and spare capacity across many drives, so rebuild work is spread widely and completes faster than a traditional single-parity rebuild.

How is the ME5212 supplied and warranted?

We configure and supply new ME5200 arrays with Dell ProSupport and ProDeploy service options, tested and rack-ready. Tell us your host and capacity needs and we will quote a build.

What enclosure management and monitoring options exist?

Beyond the PowerVault Manager GUI and CLI, the array integrates with OpenManage Enterprise for central monitoring, exposes a Redfish/Swordfish REST API for automation, and offers a vCenter plugin so storage can be watched from the hypervisor console.

How are firmware updates handled on the ME5212?

Controller, expansion-module and drive firmware are updated through PowerVault Manager using staged update bundles, typically in a non-disruptive manner on a dual-controller system so hosts with redundant paths stay online.

Can the ME5212 be used as direct-attached as well as SAN storage?

Yes. The same array supports native block SAN or DAS, so it can be connected to servers over SAS for direct attachment or presented across FC or iSCSI as shared storage.
