Quick answer: The R7525 is the expansion leader of Dell’s 15th-generation AMD EPYC family: a 2U dual-socket Rome/Milan platform with 32 DDR4 slots, eight Gen4 slots, up to 24 front NVMe drives and three 300 W double-width GPUs — compute, flash and accelerators in one chassis, factory-sealed NOS with a 3-year warranty. What Is the Dell PowerEdge R7525?

Two SP3 sockets accept EPYC 7002 (Rome) or 7003 (Milan) processors up to 64 cores and 280 W each — 128 cores in an air-cooled 2U. Its 32 DDR4-3200 slots scale to 2 TB with RDIMMs or 4 TB with LRDIMMs, keeping dense VM footprints and vSAN cache tiers on DRAM rather than disk.

The defining trait is how the maximums coexist: a 24-bay all-NVMe wall, eight Gen4 slots, three double-width GPU positions and 2800 W Titanium in one chassis — for buyers who have outgrown 1U slots but do not need DDR5/Gen5.

Condition: factory-sealed New Old Stock — new, unopened and never energized. Read what New Old Stock means and our 3-year warranty terms.

The Most Expandable 15G AMD Platform: When 2U Flexibility Wins

“Most expandable” is easy to print and harder to engineer. On the R7525 it means four subsystems max out together: a 24-bay 2.5 in. backplane fully populated with Gen4 NVMe; the riser cage still exposing up to eight Gen4 slots; three positions taking 300 W double-width accelerators; and 2800 W Titanium supplies keeping two 280 W CPUs, three accelerators and a full flash wall inside a redundant envelope.

  • All-flash SDS and hypervisors — a 24-NVMe vSAN or Ceph node with dual 25/100 GbE adapters.
  • GPU plus capacity together — inference, VDI or GPU databases on double-width cards with local capacity alongside.
  • Multi-NIC edge and network functions — eight Gen4 slots for NICs, DPUs and accelerators in NFV roles.

It earns its place when slots, drives and accelerators are all pushed at once — where 1U nodes sprawl into adapters, cables and separate shelves.

Building One Chassis for Compute, NVMe and Double-Width GPUs

Power, cooling and riser realities for 300 W cards

Three 300 W double-width accelerators is the ceiling, but it is a configuration exercise: GPU-rated risers are required, both CPUs must be populated because Gen4 lanes are sourced per socket, and the power shelf is not optional. Three 300 W cards with 240–280 W EPYC parts means 2400 W Platinum at minimum, 2800 W Titanium for full redundant margin; otherwise six 75 W single-width cards fit. Baffles and fan profiles must match the riser set — a mismatch is the common thermal-throttling cause in self-integrated builds.

12 × 3.5 in. capacity versus a 24 × 2.5 in. flash wall

The 12-bay 3.5 in. backplane is the capacity choice for nearline storage and backup targets; the 24-bay 2.5 in. wall is the performance choice, fully NVMe-capable. There are no rear bays, so boot and data both live at the front — making the controller the one decision to get right.

Picking the controller: H755, H755N, HBA or H840

The tri-mode PERC H755 covers mixed SAS/SATA/NVMe trays on one card; the H755N targets front NVMe plus NVMe boot. HBA345/HBA355 run IT mode for raw passthrough to ZFS, Ceph or vSAN; the H840 reaches external JBOD shelves; the S150 is the entry software SATA option. Power follows the build — 800/1400 W mainstream, 2400 W Platinum for GPUs, 2800 W Titanium for triple 300 W cards with dual high-TDP CPUs and twenty-four flash trays.

R7525 vs R6525, R7515 and the 16G R7625

These share EPYC DNA; the differences are floor plan and generation:

  • R6525 — the same Rome/Milan generation in 1U, with fewer bays, when rack units are the constraint.
  • R7515 — single socket, up to 64 cores; per-socket licensing can make it the cheaper platform when one CPU suffices. See our single-socket EPYC guide.
  • R7625 — the 16G successor on EPYC 9004 (Genoa) with DDR5 and PCIe Gen5.
  • R6625 — 16G dual-socket performance in 1U for clusters that do not need 2U bays.

One socket in 1U is the R6515; the 17G R7725 is today’s dual-socket 2U flagship. See the full AMD EPYC model directory.

Condition, Testing and Warranty

Our R7525 inventory is factory-sealed New Old Stock: original packaging with the seal intact, zero power-on hours and no deployment history. NOS excludes returns, open-box or deinstalled hardware — cartons come from channel stock and are marked NOS on quote and packing documents; the NOS explainer covers how we source and label it.

Bare-bones units can ship still sealed. For configured builds, engineers populate your exact CPUs, DIMMs and drives; baseline BIOS and iDRAC; stress-test CPU, memory and storage; and verify backplane, riser and PSU against the bill of materials. Each server ships with an inspection report and three years of direct coverage — terms on the warranty page.
