Dell PowerEdge R550 Server
What the R550 does well
The Dell PowerEdge R550 is the 2U dual-socket member of Dell’s 15th-generation PowerEdge family. It runs the same proven 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable (Ice Lake) platform as its 1U sibling — up to 24 cores per socket, 16 DDR4-2933 DIMMs and a 1 TB ceiling — but trades one rack unit for a more flexible storage backplane: 8 × 3.5″ or 16 × 2.5″ SAS/SATA front drives, three PCIe Gen4 slots and iDRAC9 management.
How we ship it: factory-sealed New Old Stock (NOS) from the 15th generation, sold by Beijing Xinchuan Technology Co., Ltd. — an independent supplier and exporter — with our own 3-year Xinchuan warranty on every unit. Inquiry-only, configured to order.
Typical workloads for the R550
General virtualization hosts
VMware vSphere, Hyper-V and KVM hosts that want more local disk than a 1U chassis allows, with dual Ice Lake sockets for vCPU density and 1 TB of memory headroom.
Local storage & backup targets
The 8 × 3.5″ backplane holds capacity SAS/SATA HDDs for backup repositories, file shares and warm data tiers on a single server, with PERC H755 or HBA355i controllers.
Application & database servers
Business applications, small databases, middleware and container hosts that benefit from 16 DIMMs, hot-swap drives and three Gen4 slots for NICs and adapters.
Branch & edge infrastructure
A conventional 2U platform for branch offices and edge rooms where SAS/SATA storage flexibility, hot-plug 600–1100 W power and iDRAC9 remote control matter.

Choosing between 3.5″ and 2.5″ backplanes
8 × 3.5″ — capacity build
Select this backplane when local capacity is the priority: backup, archive and file workloads on large SAS/SATA HDDs, or a mix of capacity HDDs plus a small SSD tier. This is the layout most often quoted for storage-first deployments.
16 × 2.5″ — performance build
Twice the drive count in smaller SAS/SATA SSDs and high-RPM HDDs suits virtualization and database hosts. Keep in mind the platform has no NVMe support; flash performance comes from SAS/SATA SSDs behind PERC RAID.
Compute, memory and management
The two CPU sockets accept 3rd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 24 cores per socket at 185 W maximum TDP. Memory scales across 16 DDR4 RDIMM slots at 2933 MT/s up to 1 TB. Storage controllers cover the S150 software RAID, PERC H345/H355/H745/H755 family and HBA355i passthrough. Three PCIe Gen4 slots plus one Gen3 slot carry network and storage adapters — there is no GPU option. Hot-plug power supplies range from 600 W through 1100 W including a 1100 W DC option, and iDRAC9 provides remote lifecycle management.
R550 vs R450: 2U storage or 1U density?
| PowerEdge R550 (15G, 2U) | PowerEdge R450 (15G, 1U) | |
|---|---|---|
| Processors | 2 × 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable, up to 24 cores/socket, 185 W | |
| Memory | 16 × DDR4-2933 RDIMM, up to 1 TB | |
| Front drives | 8 × 3.5″ or 16 × 2.5″ SAS/SATA | 4 × 3.5″ or 8 × 2.5″ SAS/SATA |
| NVMe / GPU | None / None | None / None |
| PCIe slots | 3 × Gen4 + 1 × Gen3 | 2 × Gen4 + 1 × Gen3 internal |
| Power supplies | 600 / 800 / 1100 W and 1100 W DC | 600 / 700 / 800 / 1100 W incl. DC |
| Choose when | You need more internal SAS/SATA storage | Rack units are the constraint |
If the extra 2U bays are not on your bill of materials, compare the Dell PowerEdge R450. Within the wider 15G lineup, the PowerEdge R750 adds NVMe and GPU headroom, and the PowerEdge R650 is the denser 1U performance chassis.
